A Good Summer Read


Summer is finally here in Rochester and we are ready to kick back and relax—sans reading assignments. If you are looking for a good read related to physical therapy here are some reading recommendations:


Left Neglected

Author: Lisa Genova

After a car accident leaves a mother in her thirties with a traumatic brain injury and "left neglect," she must retrain her mind to perceive the world as a whole. Lisa Genova has additional stories about the impact of Alzheimer's Disease, Huntington's Chorea, Autism, and ALS on families.




Run, Don't Walk 

Author: Adele Levine

In this collection of memoirs, Levine recounts the many experiences that defined her life when she worked at Walter Reed Army Medical center, one of the world’s leading amputee rehabilitation facilities.



How Far Can You Go: My 25 Year Question to Walk Again

Author: John McLean

An inspirational memoir by a man who became an elite wheelchair athlete after suffering a catastrophic spinal injury and who finally walked again 25 years after his accident.






The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Author: Jean-Dominique Bauby

The author, a magazine editor, and father in his forties that was the victim of a brainstem stroke and "locked-in" syndrome. Left with only the ability to move his left eye, he wrote this book about his experiences.







My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey

Author: Jill Bolte Taylor

The story of a 37-year-old brain scientist that has a stroke and recalls how she was treated when she was a patient at her most confused. Great advice when working with patients.
